I can't possibly be the only person who finds mandatory annual "Insider trading is bad, m'kay?" trainings just a bit fucking insulting, right?

Like, maybe the first one is justified as part of onboarding, sure. Just to make sure the rules are known and clear.

Every year? Are engineers so stupid that we forget after 11 months and need a refresher? Is that who companies believe are writing their mission critical software?

Not aimed at any one company 'cause they all do it. But who thinks this is useful?


@saramg On the one hand, yes I agree it's a bit asinine.

But I also roll out things like mandatory annual "don't click links in email" phishing awareness training. You'd think it would also be unnecessary ... but the folks who get phished LITERALLY THE FOLLOWING WEEK justify the policy.

Most engineers are smart enough they don't need the annual refresher. But the 5-10% who are stupid enough to actually need it force the hands of the policymakers.

@saramg Given how hard it is to hire that many folks, making the 90% who know what they're doing put up with an extra few minutes of redundant training is orders of magnitude less in cost, effort, and frustration.

As frustrating as that redundant training feels.
